The Artery is your community for finding solutions to your day-to-day clinical chemistry questions. Last month, several answers were found to questions ranging from "Have You Adjusted Your Lab’s Reference Intervals to Accommodate a New Instrument?" to “How Much Can Labs Reduce Inpatient Non-Sendout Ordering?”. Read on for our editor’s picks of the best discussions on the Artery in February.
Have You Adjusted Your Lab’s Reference Intervals to Accommodate a New Instrument?
Initiated by
@Matthew Wasco, MD
Switching to new instruments can cause laboratorians to consider adjusting their reference intervals to accept ranges suggested by the manufacturers. But changes in reference intervals can lead to unintended complications. What has your lab experienced when converting to new instruments and did you adjust your lab’s reference intervals?
Have You Seen an Uptick in Requests for SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein?
Initiated by
@Charles Beavers, MD
With concerns rising over new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, research efforts are focusing on the spike protein and the protective antibodies against it. Limited research thus far has shown that higher titers may be required for SARS-CoV-2 variants. What research has your lab seen or conducted about the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein?
How Much Can Labs Reduce Inpatient Non-Sendout Ordering?
Initiated by
@David Alter, MD DABCC
Laboratories consider the value in reducing inpatient non-sendout test ordering. Arterians weigh in on whether small reductions in testing and re-testing are truly beneficial for patient care and cost savings for laboratories. How much room do you have to adjust test utilization in your lab?
